First of all: this config would not boot with grub 0.97 (just tested) --
it would not find where to boot from. You missed drive and partition to
load kernel and initrd from -- you missed "root (hd0,1)".
To complex to translate? And beforehand load partitiontable and drive
you are booting from?
This directly leads to a working most simple grub2-config:
insmod part_gpt
insmod ext2
set timeout=5
menuentry "Default" {
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /boot/vmlinuz
initrd /boot/initrd
}
