Type <<version>> into a tiddler and click done. This will tell you what version the core TW engine is. The latest version of TW is 2.5.0 The Backstage area (located in the upper right corner, and often invisible till you hover over it) wasn't added until ... 2.0 or so. If you are running something newer then that, it is not there.
You can still install plugins by opening the plugin, copy all of the tiddler contents, and then pasting it into atiddler in your TW. Also cut and paste the tags. Click done, save the TW, and then reload the TW.
