i do not think this is the correct way to go. A document based API is something you would expect from a specialized application object (or interface) but not from a generic one. A generic application API should cover things like tracking of the application windows, information about the application for interaction with other applications and maybe some global UI elements like a part of a menu which is used in multiple windows or an about dialog.
