Configure must have lied to you. Maybe it didn't detect libz properly
but unless you patch GTKG you cannot compile it successfully without
libz. If you have zlib.h in your include path and libz.so or libz.a
in your library path and runpath, you should be able to compile GTKG
regardless of what Configure told you. As far as I can see, GTKG 
includes <zlib.h> unconditionally, so the checks do not really matter
in this case.
AFAIK, Raphael is aware of this and has promised to fix it.
