One of the issues is a result of a design decision by servent authors - to include directory names as part of the search keys. Those sites may have subdirectories named "jpg" "gif" "pr0n", etc, but that information is never sent to somebody querying that node - only the file name (which is often as you say, "001.jpg", "b008.gif", etc.). I don't believe that GtkG does this (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong). I believe that each file should have a name that's complete in itself (AFAIK, I don't think that there's a Gnet servent that'll even run on Win 3.x, so 8.3 file naming shouldn't be an issue anywhere). IMO, having files name "001.jpg" or "b008.gif" is worse than useless, as you have to waste bandwidth by downloading them just to find out what they are (OK, I'm finished ranting now - you can uncover you ears...). >Out of curiosity, is the fact that no path information is shown in GTKG a >limitation of: >- the browse host extension, >- GTKG's display, >- the LIME nodes that I usually browse or >- a PEBKAC on my side? > I did a quick browse through the code, and I don't see anything stripping directories, so I *think* that what you see is what is sent by the host. And I'm not sure I *want* to see the full directory path from the host. It might make sorting easier, but can you imagine how LONG those entries could get? You'd just create a situation where you'd run out of horizontal room in the display (like those files with 50+ keywords as part of the name aren't bad enough).
