Don't say "return(1)".  First it's not a function, and second the grammar
for it is "return EXPR".  You don't write "a = (1);", do you? :-)

On a related note, I think a 15-sec overhead for sorting 7600 files,
even on an ancient box means that there is something bad in your
algorithm complexity.  Had you said 1-sec, that would have been fine.
We'll need to test the overhead for 50000 files as well, just to be sure
we have nothing in O(n*n).
