The hotel we stayed at was the Palm Canyon resort, real nice and only
$55 night, although Terry got a group rate I think.
Big rooms with 2 queen beds so you could buddy up to cut costs further.
Great pool area where they had the welcome BBQ / buffet. 
Great roads, like 33 from Taft into Ojai (to see Widder) and 78 east
into Borrego Springs. I also understand 79 & 76 are real twisty, but
haven't been on them.
Borrego Springs itself is dead with not much at all going on, although
the bar at the hotel is nice.
