Picked up my GTS from Yamaha dealer in Boulder the other day, in for the HU
replacement. As I had feared, squeezing the front brake hard resulted in the
lever going all the way to the bar! So I explained to them about the extra
care needed to bleed the GTS brakes, removing the front caliper, etc and
after hanging around for a good hour they got it right. Despite this, in my
dealings with them so far (fitting new tires (bought by mail order) to both
the GTS and my Guzzi and the HU replacement) I have to say I have been happy
with their service, which for me is rare.

I gotta admit it felt good to know you just had $2,000 worth of work done to
a bike out of warranty and walk out of the place without opening your wallet
for once. While I was there the Service Manager showed me what he thought
the cause of the failures was. Around the black rubber grommet at the base
of the wires leading to the solenoids was a small rusty patch where he
thought water gets in and screws up the solenoid operation. This is clearly
visible in the 10th photo down from the top in the "ABS Pump Rebuild
Procedure" shown on Kevin Hawkins' web site at
http://www.geocities.com/~raddboy/index.html

He recommended applying silicone around the base of the wires and grommet.
I'm not convinced this has anything to do with the failure but just thought
I'd pass on the info. And it can't hurt to dab on a bit of silicone if you
get the chance.

Cheers,

Joe.
