As a Canadian, I have an observation that I've made.

I get the impression from American riders I've met that they expect the
road to be clear & well marked when they're riding.  I don't mean any
offense by this.  All riding I've done in the US road defects were all
noted, marked, etc.  My experiences in Canada cause me to ride like there
is a deer on the road around every corner standing on a washed out section
of road. I expect junk on the road.  I suspect this attitude is
appropriate for most of the world, with the US being an exception to the
rule.  We all should have roads as good.
