Hi folks,
There have been a handful of people popping into IRC to ask if
Guix
has a position on AB 1043[1], California’s age verification law.
If
you’re not familiar, this law purports to require operating system
providers to collect the age of its user(s), and provide an API
for
applications to query it. The law takes effect on 2027-01-01,
though
it may be amended before that date.
There seem to be a few approaches to this taking shape:
- Implementing the mechainsm.
- Geoblocking California IP addresses.
- Adding a "not for use in California" disclaimer.
- Ignore it and hope it goes away.
It’s probably worth figuring out what our position is on this, and
putting out a statement to that effect.
