Poinguinim Sept 25: Politicians of all parties have focused their attention on Gaondongri and Cotigao panchayat areas in Poinguinim with just one objective to garner the maximum number of votes from these areas. They are intent on quenching their thirst for votes while caring two hoots about the struggle of the locals to quench their thirst for water.
These areas with a population of over 5000 has been reeling under a age-old problem of drinking water scarcity. For the last 30 years, the locals have had to depend on natural water sources like springs to quench their thirst. During the summer, these springs run dry, adding to the woes of the villagers. The concerned authorities were intimated time and again but to no avail.
The villagers inform that former MLAs had tried to solve the problem by formulating a scheme to construct a dam at Gavnem but it remained merely on paper. In some areas, water pipes have been installed, spending lakhs of rupees but water is yet to flow in these pipes. A mere five or six tube wells cannot meet the needs of this population, say the villagers.
They come once in five years to meet us and make lofty promises, says an elderly villager from Cotigao. The locals of Babrem ward, when contacted, revealed that the water in their wells turns saline in the summer season which leading to a drinking water problem.
It is sad that people in the so-called progressive state of Goa are still deprived of a basic amenity like drinking water.
