BJP wins Poinguinim seat in Goa 
Margao, Oct. 16 (PTI): The BJP today won the Poinguinim Assembly constituency, a Congress bastion, that went to the bypolls on October 13 by a margin of about 2,500 votes, lending further stability to the Manohar Parrikar Government in Goa. 
BJP candidate Isidore Fernandes, who won last time on a Congress ticket, retained his seat but on a different symbol, beating his nearest rival Jagdish Acharya of the Congress. 
Fernandes polled 6,963 votes against Acharya's 4,468. The counting of votes was completed in a record 22 minutes at the heavily guarded centre here in the city. 
The by-poll was necessitated after Fernandes quit his seat and joined the BJP. 
Jagdish Acharya had the support of most Opposition parties in Goa. 
Terming the victory as "very important from the point of view of stability of the Government", Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, told PTI here that "it is not that my Government was not stable, but now that we have 20 members in the 40-member Assembly, the common perception that we were a seat short of the half way mark and therefore not stable, will change". 
With Fernandes's victory, the BJP now has 20 MLAs besides the support of an Independent, and the lone MLAs each of the MGP and UGDP, all of whom enjoy ministerial berths. 
"I have always had the support of the three MLAs and my Government was always stable, but this result has theoretically put my Government in a majority and there will be no room for people to talk now", Parrikar said.  (The Hindu).
