Viewers of the Cable network in Goa -- awaited with unabated breath to watch -- the few selected young participants after the first round in the widely publicised "INDIAN IDOL" auditioning process held earlier in September 2004 at the auditioning venues in the major metropolis of Mumbai, Kolkatta,Chennai, Delhi ---on SONY TV hour long programme scheduled for 28th October 2004 at 2130 hrs and later on 29th and 30th October 2004 at 2100 hrs (IST)
Everyday during the auditioning in September 2004 over 300 hundred aspirants in the age group of 16 to 30 years as on 1st August 2004 vied for top honours. They made it to the metropolis from all corners of the country at costs borne by them only to ascertain their singing talents -- and covet the "Indian idol" title. The participants had to fill in a Registration Form --- giving a) the names of their favourite singer, how well one can sing viz; bathroom singer, college and society competitions, family functions or lead vocalist in an amateur band c) why should one be selected, d) any experience in the entertainment industry e) ones proudest achievement to date---- Next to select the order of ones ability in a scale of 1 for best to 4 for worst --singing song writing dancing acting ---given a choice which Indian language other than English would one prefer to sing and finally describe oneself in 10 words. The contest however appeared a poor replicate of the AMERICAN IDOL last year where a Black was rated THE BEST . Of the three participants from Goa one native and two of native / non native parentage just one Ms Janice made it to the second round thus far. The organisors found a "poor response" from Goa and hence Goa was not selected as auditioning venue. But this writer who did a quick survey of the opinion of viewers in Goa and discovered that the show telecast on day one 28.10.2004 was according to the majority a total flop. (Seeing the type of the programme one would not have regrets that Goans did indeed not participate in large numbers) Yes one hour was time wasted ---- there was an young banana hawker from the streets of Mumbai who failed to make it --- and he was told that bluntly ---by the three member judge consisting of Messrs Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam singers and lone female judge Choreographer Ms Farah Khan. Then there was the case where a mother accompanied her daughter for the audition and realising she was not selected went into the audition venue demanded that her daughter be given a retrial --- it was agreed --but then when told by the judge she was not selected the mother abused the judges even went to destroy the judges marks sheet in full glare of the TV cameras. This was ridiculous considering the security at the venue. Another man who could well be in his late fifties justified to the panel judges his age as 29 years and was even called as "uncle" by the lady judge --- but that did not deter him to justify his age as 29 years and this when the Producers Freemantle Television Productions India Limited as well as SET Pvt India Pvt Ltd made it a precondition in the Registration form to insist on acceptable documents in proof of age. Then an utterly shocked spectacled girl who viewers will agree would definitely deserved to qualify for a second round was sarcastically told by the judge that she would never make it. Finally there were two youth ---a boy (who had earlier won an "antakashari" contest) and a girl who belongs to a family of Indian dancers who definitely deserved selection and they did make it ---there is no doubt that they would get a blanket cheque from the voting audience on their "good to excellent" performance. Unfortunately all but one of the singers sang "filmi songs" which suited thier voice unaccompanied by any musical instrument and hence one wonders whether judging would be a fair process. The Producers had assured ones discreetion in apparel -- but reserved their rights to disqualify in case -- but some of the participants did exhibit slightly uncivil outfits . In any case the one hour show featured just such a few participants that one wondered what all the hullaboo was all about. What was shocking was the crude way the judges would tell the contestants that they were unqualified-- surely there are better ways and the judges could convey failure not that harsh blunt tone. Sonum Nigam was a little considerate judge definitely not Ms Farah Khan and Anu Malik -- they need a refresher course in judging. Goa a land of music could have fared definitely better --- and why not have a GOAN IDOL competition Event managers any plans with Goa IFFI 2004?
