[India News]: Panjim, Jan 2, 2005 : The 16th exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier concluded at old Goa today with over 22 lakh people having visited the Se Cathedral during the 42-day period for venerating the Saint.
Hundreds of devotess gathered to watch the casket containing the relics being carried from the Se Cathedral to its orginal place in the Basilica of Bom Jesus across the road.
Later Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao as well as Archbishop Emeritus Raul Gonsalves presided over the mass.
St Francis Xavier, considered the patron saint of Goa, is revered throughout the state.
The casket containing the relics are kept for display on a ledge in the Basilica and brought down every ten years, for veneration by the public.
Over 22 lakh people visited the exposition, an increase of 10 lakh pilgrims than last year.
"Last time we had around 12 lakh people
visiting. This time the official count was 22 lakh people, exposition commissioner Bosco George told PTI.
"The Panaji municipal corporation collected more than 215 tonnes of garbage over the past 42 days," he said adding although the initial budget for the exposition was Rs 1 crore, the expenditure had exceeded that figure. PTI
