Goans should maintain communal harmony

[India News]: Panaji, Jan 26, 2005 : Calling on Goans to maintain communal harmony in the state, Governor S C Jamir today said Goa should serve as a model for the entire country to emulate.

"Goa has always had a history of communal harmony. The ties that bind the communities here must never be severed. Vested interests must not be allowed to sever the ties. On this occasion I call upon fellow citizens to rededicate themselves to the task of preserving this harmony," Jamir said in his address during the Republic Day parade at the state capital here.

Lauding Goa for making large strides in development despite being under colonial rule for more than 14 years after the rest of the nation became independent, the Governor said the state would have to learn to use its abundant human and natural resources to the fullest.

Earlier, Jamir inspected the parade and unfurled the national tri-colour in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Speaker of Legislative Assembly Vishwas Satarkar and Leader of Opposition Pratapsingh Rane.

Children from various schools then presented a cultural programme, followed by a rendition of "Vande Mataram" accompanied by a dance performance by handicapped children. PTI
