Parikkar shunts minister; UGDPS leader joins BJP

PANAJI, JANUARY 27: Micky Pacheco, the lone member of a regional party in the Goa Assembly today joined the ruling BJP, even as Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar shunted out Atanasio Monserrate from the all powerful Town and Country Planning Department. 
Pacheco had formed the United Goans Democratic Party (Secular) in June 2003 after refusing to join the ruling party, along with Ananasio Monserrate � another member of the original UGDP. 






























Pacheco told The Indian Express that he had handed over his letter of joining the BJP to the Speaker. ��I have merged my party, UGDP(Secular) in the BJP following a unanimous decision taken today in the Executive Committee meeting held in Panaji,�� he said. 
With this the strength of the BJP in the house of 40 has gone to 21. Political sources say that the decision to admit Pacheco was taken by the Chief Minister to checkmate the all powerful Monserrate, who was planning a rebellion against him with the support of the Opposition Congress. Monserrate had managed to procure some important positions in the government for his supporting MLA and also his wife, Jennifer, who was given the all important Planning and Development Authority�s chairmanship. 
Monserrate had also announced plans of contesting the next Assembly election on UGDP ticket. But his plans may not be realised now after Parrikar shunting him out. 
Parrikar has already forwarded a file of reshuffles to the Governor. ��Having reviewed the performance of my ministers during the last two-and- half-years, I have taken this decision,�� he told reporters. The reshuffle and Pacheco�s joining the BJP, said Parrikar, was a coincidence.
