SPORTS: Shabbir Ali quits Churchill Brothers

Shabbir Ali resigned as coach of Churchill Bros, last night, owing moral responsibility for the pathetic display by the Goan heavyweights. Churchill Bros are struggling to find their feet, this season, and their performance in the ONGC National Football League has been only worsening. Shabbir decided to say enough was enough after Churchill Bros were gunned down 1-3 by State Bank of Travancore. While Churchill Bros prepared to leave Kerala for Goa, Shabbir Ali boarded a train for Bangalore. He later took a Hyderabad-bound flight and reached home, early this morning, primarily to be besides his ailing wife. If I cannot deliver results, what is the point in continuing, Shabbir told Herald when contacted at his Hyderabad residence. Shabbir probably has a point. For a squad that seriously lacks a quality bench, lying second off the bottom in the ONGC NFL table and without a win in six matches, things are anything but rosy. In the meanwhile, despite the setback, there was still hope floating around for Churchill Bros. Shabbir Ali has dropped hints to suggest that he could do a rethink on his decision. The coach is expected in Goa on Tuesday, February 15 and would sort out the differences. Joaquim Alemao, president of Churchill Bros, initially feigned ignorance about Shabbirs whereabouts, but when told Herald had traced Shabbir Ali in Hyderabad, he was furious with the developments. He spoke to me last night and said he was resigning. I, however, told him to come to Goa and explain to us what difficulties he was facing, Alemao told this paper, before questioning, How can he just abandon the team. He has a contract with us till May. Joaquim Alemao was candid enough in admitting that there was no point in holding on to Shabbir, if his heart was not willing to continue but said abandoning a side mid-way was both unethical and amateurish. Last nights development caps a miserable season for Shabbir Ali, who was, in October, unceremoniously booted out by Fransa-Pax Football Club. There is no doubt, however, that Shabbir Ali remains a great footballer 35 goals in international matches is proof enough and an equally competent coach. The Hyderabadi, however, has faced the rough end of the coaching stick, ever since he quit Salgaocar Sports Club, whom he guided to NFL triumph in 1999, the only time a Goan team could win it till date.
