Hi there,

The Curchorem railway station (in connection with the article mentioned below)
traces its origins to an Aldonkar, according to historian and an Aldonkar, Fr
Cosme Jose Costa SFX.
In an article, Fr Costa writes that Fr Custodio Rosario Caetano Barreto from
Loutolim had founded the Association of Missionaries for the evangelisation
of the New Conquests of Goa in 1873.
Fr Barreto used two of his Portuguese names to identify the two chapels of
Guardian Angel (Anjo Custodio) in Sanvordem and Our Lady of Rosary (Rosario) at
Rivona. Incidentally, an altar was dedicated to S Caetano (his third name) at
the Tilamol church.
Fr Barreto in one of his mission tours through Sanvordem, befriended a Catholic
contractor, Tome Caetano da Costa from Aldona, who was laying the railway line
and the Curchorem station.
Fr Barreto was very interested in having a chapel in Sanvordem and offered to
defray a part of the expenses of construction. The two of them drew the plans
and calculated the cost of construction at Rs 4,000. In a public document on
July 17, 1885, Da Costa was awarded the contract of building the chapel.

Regards,
Melvyn

Woes that derail Curchorem railway station

A HERALD REPORT
By Melvyn Misquita

When the chaiwalla serves you tea at the Curchorem railway station, be prepared
to sip in a generous portion of dust.

No, not the tea-dust flavour of reputed brands, but tea that has been mixed
with particles of earth, blown from the mud-filled railway platform.

But the dust-filled tea and snacks counter -- which incidentally sports
prominent Keep Clean signs -- is only a part of the problem at the Curchorem
railway station.

A locked toilet that compels people to urinate and defecate in the open, a
waiting room that has been locked, a handful of seats monopolised by labourers
and beggars for their afternoon siesta and then, a platform that resembles a
field in the absence of floor tiles.
