The first face a Bardezkar sees a little after sunrise
(or before breakfast) is that of the Saxttikar poder
(breadman).
This clever Saxttikar (mostly a Majordekar) is the guy
who shifted the Bardezkar from his morning bakor
(chapatti) to pao or poie (bread). Most of the
grandmothers/mothers/aunts/wives/sisters and even the
'kireides' are internally grateful to Saxttikar poders
for giving them a little more sleep/dream time to the
music of the chipping birds or the friendly sound of
the kavllo (crow) every morning.
Of late, however, the trend is changing!
A few Hindus are even seen in Bardez villages - from
as far as Sanvordem and Ponda, giving a scare to the
Saxttikar poder!
But as one famous breadman who is based in the Gulf
quipped: 'Soggle poder ghara-gharanim vochunk atam
loz'zetat pao vikpako'? 'Atam tem sogglea
khel-tiatrist zaleat vo sirvis kortat Gulf-aku'. (All
bakers now feel shy to sell bread house to house. Now
they have all turned dramatists or doing 'sirvis' in
the Gulf-aku).
On the Tiatr field, here Saxttikar now has outshined
Bardezkar. Except for a few from Quepem, Ilhas,
Pednem and Sanvordem, most tiatrists/
khell-tiatrists/comedians now hail from Salcete.
The Bardezkar has now literally to entertain
themselves tolerating the Saxttikar's Konkani dialect
and has to content himself/herself shouting for an
encore in the same tone.... Ankov ieo, Ankov ieo, once
more ?
