Cyclonic winds disrupt life in state

NT Staff Reporter

Panaji April 20: Sudden cyclonic winds accompanied by rain and thunder lashed several parts of Goa this evening causing havoc with nearly ten fishing trawlers capsising off Mormugao Harbour and hundreds of trees uprooted, damaging a number of houses and cars, blowing the roof-tops and disrupting the electric supply in many parts of the state. The velocity of the cyclonic winds, which hit the city and several parts of Goa around 7.45 p.m, was over 70 km per hour. The winds lasted for nearly an hour and caused unprecedented damage to properties in many parts of the state. However there are no reports of any loss of life from any part of the state.

The loss due to the damage is being ascertained and the fire services and the Corporation of the City of Panaji employees were on the job to clear the roads, which had been blocked due to the falling of tress or branches. People were caught up unaware and had to face hard time to reach home.  The local observatory said that this was a routine atmospheric phenomena caused due to the rise in temperature. The observatory officials termed such phenomenon as squally winds and they said this often takes place during hot summer. This is the second time such phenomena has occurred in Goa in a less then a weeks time.

The air-conditioned structure of the exhibition Interior-Exterior at Kala Academy complex, here, was also badly damaged and the organisers estimated the loss at Rs 15 to 20 lakh. Besides, a car parked at the Kala Academy complex was also damaged due to a tree fall. The river cruises were stopped while several trawlers had to return in view of the cyclonic winds and rain.

Several parts of Goa were plunged into darkness as the electricity department had to shut down power supply. Several power lines were snapped and conductors damaged due to the rain and winds. Besides, a 110 KV Tivim feeder was also damaged. The electricity department engineers and linemen were on the job to restore the power supply. Power was restored in some areas by drawing supply from another feeder late in the night.

In the city market, the metal sheets were blown off and the traders faced difficulty in protecting their shops from the rain. The Goa Fire and Emergency Services personnel were on their toes today between from 8 p.m to 9 p.m as it had received nearly 70 calls, mostly about the falling of the trees.

In three different incidents in city three parked cars were damaged as huge trees came crashing down; one near old secretariat, another near Cine National and the third near Pehli Manzil at Campal. The branches of trees had fallen at several places on the busy D B Bandodkar Marg.

Besides, a huge tree was uprooted near the 2 Signal Training Centre headquarters in the city. The trees were also uprooted in Cabo Raj Niwas, Miramar, Shankarwadi in Taleigao, Mala, Fontainhas, Bhatulem and St Inez areas. At Aldona, a banyan tree and an old house caught fire, when the lightening strike them. Fortunately nobody was staying in the house.

The cyclonic winds forced people to run helter-skelter to take a safe place, while proceeding towards the KTC bus stand. The buses were also rescheduled on almost all routes in view of cyclonic winds. Passengers were seen stranded at KTC stand till late in the evening due to the rescheduling of buses. The local people, besides tourists were also seen drenched in the rain at several places.
