Spic(e)y flight: Delhi-Mumbai for Rs 1,599

NEW DELHI: The domestic air traveller's honeymoon with low fares has just been extended. India's latest kid on the budget airline block, SpiceJet has joined the fare war, offering one-way tickets on the Delhi-Mumbai route for Rs 1,599.

This new rock-bottom fare has been announced for the new late night flights that the airline will operate on its domestic routes starting August 17. This will also make SpiceJet the first domestic airline to operate late night flights.

The airline will operate flights between Delhi and Mumbai, via Ahmedabad. The fare between Delhi and Ahmedabad would be Rs 999 and that between Ahmedabad and Mumbai Rs 599.

Its Delhi-Mumbai late-night fare is at least 25% cheaper than the discount fares on the same sector offered by rival airlines like Jet Airways, Air Sahara and Indian Airlines (IA).

Jet, for instance, offers a Delhi-Mumbai one-way economy class ticket for as low as Rs 2,120, while Indian Airlines' cheapest fare on the route is Rs 3,821.

Also, IA on Wednesday extended its monsoon super saver scheme till September 5, offering 12 economy tickets for Rs 48,500 or 12 business class tickets for Rs 72,500.
