When the Back Aches...

By Adelmo Fernandes

“For all the happiness mankind can gain is not in pleasure but in rest from pain,” wrote Dryden. Yes indeed, who wouldn’t want to live a life free from pain? But then pain is a part and parcel of everyday living. Of course there are the physical pains and the emotional pains. It is said that there is no gain without pain. Whoever coined this phrase was definitely not referring to the back-pain. Of all the aches and pains one experiences, the one that is most common is probably the back-pain. The worst part is that a back-pain is always at the back of your mind. You could be a fitness-freak but there is no telling when you will be a victim of a back-pain. Even athletes and sportsmen have experienced this pain at some time in their career. One may recall that not long ago one of the world’s best batsman Sachin Tendulkar was a victim of this pain so much so that he was forced to sit out during several matches.

Another thing bad about a bad-back is that the pain comes back every now and then. In severe cases it can leave one immobile for a considerable length of time. It appears without a warning and at times disappears without a trace.... until the next time. The thing about backaches is that they bring discomfort whether you are in a standing position, or sitting position or even when one is lying down in the horizontal position. You are in no position to climb up nor climb down the steps. As a matter of fact you cannot even bend down to tie your shoe-laces. Of course, depending on the origin of the pain you can have a lower-back pain or an upper-back pain, but then it is a shooting pain nevertheless which at times spreads to other parts of the body. With a bad back you cannot walk with a normal posture. You cannot turn your body around whenever necessary. Even carrying a back-pack may seem a tedious task. The advice of a physiotherapist for someone with back-pain would be to lie down on a hard surface. This seems like adding salt to injury. Imagine having to give up the comfort of a soft bed and sleep on the floor and that too with a bad-back.

Be that as it may a bad back makes driving a car or riding a two-wheeler a painful task. As a matter of fact the doctor’s advice would be not to drive any vehicle nor do any travelling. The question to be asked is how best can one avoid a back-ache? Probably a good walking, sitting and sleeping posture could be the good doctor’s advice. Prevention is better than cure, specially if one is talking about a back-pain. But then having taken all these precautions how does one explain the sudden spasms in the back-muscles that I experienced the other day? It is simply because if a back-ache has to happen it will happen. It all depends on your back-bone.
