Abu Dhabi: A Man Without A Nationality?

It's A believe it or not case....

Abu Dhabi, Aug 10: He is neither an Indian nor a Pakistani and has remained a stateless person in the UAE.  Mr. Moideen owner of Bin Siraj supermarket on Airport road in Abu dhabi is without a nationality from the past 14 months. 71 year old Moideen left the shores of Mallapuram in the southern Indian state of Kerala even before the formation of the state. He arrived in Abu Dhabi 47 years ago.  Moideen obtained an Indian passport three decades ago from Chennai and renewed it thrice at the Indian Embassy.

But now after 3 decades the Indian Embassy here has asked him to prove his nationality by taking back his passport which belong to him.  The frail old man is now running from pillar to post and has not been successful in getting a reply from the Indian Embassy.

Moideen’s story is like this. He moved out of Kerala in the year 1956 and came to Mumbai.  From there he wanted to take a boat to Dubai. Some fraudulent agent dropped him off on the coast in Karachi saying that it was Dubai.

Moideen had nowhere to go and was left with no money in his pocket.  Started working in a Hotel in Karachi.  He then obtained a Pakistani passport through an agent and traveled to India  after obtaining visas.  In the year 1965 he came to Dubai holding a Pakistani Passport and even here in UAE he managed to travel to India by obtaining Indian visas to visit his family back home in Kerala.  Till date he has traveled 71 times to India from Pakistan and the UA.E.

Being an Indian he was fed up of holding a Pakistani passport and so he destroyed it and obtained an Indian passport no. 5531607 from Chennai on May 10, 1972.  But he didn’t tell the Indian authorities about his Pakistani Passport, which has turned out to be a major folly.

Moideen renewed his passport three times but at the fourth renewal the Indian Embassy came to know the facts and asked him to surrender his 50 year old Pakistani Passport. The new Indian ambassador to the UAE Mr. Chandra Mohan Bhandary has in a letter to the authorities urged them to consider Moideen’s case on sympathetic grounds and grant him an Indian passport as he is a victim of cheating by fraudsters.

Poor Moideen is now under pressure because of his age and is unable to renew the license of his supermarket and move out of Abu Dhabi.  He says that he doesn’t want to blame anyone because he was cheated and it is his  fate, destiny will show him a way but he feels that he is a proud Indian and wants to die in his motherland if only the Indian government could pardon him and grant him his passport.
