| NEW DELHI: There arenÂ’t any surprises in the grand old party when it comes to elections to the Congress working committee, the partyÂ’s apex decision-making body. Like the last time, its leaders are all set to authorise party president Sonia Gandhi to choose CWC members when the panel, presently converted into a steering committee, meets this weekend.
Party circles have indicated that the time-tested route would be favoured by the senior leadership as it sidesteps actual elections, an exercise that can prove quite uncomfortable for many of them. The last time too, attempts to force an election by some enthusiastic second generation leaders was promptly scuttled as the seniors opted for the “one-line resolution authorising party president’’ route. Elections to the CWC were last held in Calcutta in 1997 when the party was headed by Sitaram Kesri. The meeting of the steering panel is considered significant as it will work out the calender for forthcoming events that would signal the end of the internal electoral process. Ms Gandhi on Monday evening held discussions with party leaders on this score. Among other things, the steering panel is also to finalise plans for hosting a chief minister’s conclave next month. Such conclaves have been used effectively to drive home the point about Ms Gandhi’s absolute clout though Congress leaders always claim that it presents an opportunity to coordinate party’s programme in different states. The conclave will have three more additions in CMs from Haryana, Goa and Andhra taking the total tally to 15. Party circles said a toss-up was between Dehradun and Chandigarh for hosting the two-day CM’s conference. The steering panel is also to take a view on holding the plenary session of the AICC, which will formally mark the end of organisational polls. Party circles said the central leadership had received requests from several party-controlled states to host the event, tentatively scheduled in the first week of October. It appears that the process of nominating CWC members will be timed along with the CM conclave, even though it is the plenary session where CWC elections take place, if they are not left to the party president. The election of AICC members, numbering over 1,000, which is the actual electoral college of CWC members, was almost through, party circles asserted. |
