Naval marine commandos on Tuesday rescued one survivor and located a major portion of the crashed Kamov-28 helicopter about 55 km north-east of Dabolim airport, on the Goa Karnataka border, the Navy spokesman said here. The wreckage was found in dense forest around 11 hours on Tuesday.
Four of the crew members have been confirmed dead, and the search is still on for the sixth member, naval spokesman Cdr N V Kesari said.
The missing crew member, air mechanic Beant Singh was the one to have first alerted the authorities about the crash on his cellphone. It was Singh's phone call that gave the Navy vital clues about the crash location, Cdr Kesari told Deccan Herald.
The Russian made copter crashed in the Western Ghats in bad weather on Friday when it was on a routine mission from the Navy's airbase at INS Hansa, Dabolim to Hyderabad.
The rescued crew member Jr Air Engineer Sandeep Singh has been admitted to the naval hospital at Dabolim. He suffered multiple fractures, but has been declared out of danger.
Sandeep Singh survived four days and nights in the thickest of the Western Ghat jungles with no food or water. "He was very much alone through this ordeal," Kesari said.
Among the dead are Cdr Y Ravindra Nath, Lt Cdr O Sahrawat, A K Singh and W Ravinder. Sources here said the four members had most likely died at the time of the crash.
The Navy's four days intensive search and rescue operations were assisted by the army, air force, coast guard, police and forest
department personnel from Goa and Karnataka.
The wreckage and survivor were however located by the Navy's marine commandos who were airdropped into the jungle from the Goa end at Valpoi. The commandos spent four days combing the area. |
