Centre ready to declare Goa as permanent venue for IFFI: Rane
Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane has hinted that the Central Government has conceded the state's demand that it be declared as the ''permanent venue'' for holding the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI). In an informal chat with mediapersons here last night, Mr Rane said the Centre would announce its decision immediately after it signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state soon. He said the MoU would be signed between state Information and Publicity Secretary Debashree Mukherjee and her counterpart in the Directorate of Film Festivals under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, New Delhi. The Chief Minister said all the modalities for hosting the festival would be worked out after signing the MoU. It has also planned to screen permitted films on the tourist hotspots of Miramar, Calangute and Colva beach fronts with huge plasma screens for the general public during the IFFI.
The
agreement should have been signed last year immediately after the conclusion of IFFI, but it did not happen as the political crisis had engulfed the Parrikar government.
He said that for the 36th edition of the IFFI both the state and the Centre would share the expenditure, which is likely to be about Rs 3-5 crore including the actual management of the event and hospitality for the guests. The event will begin on November 24 and end on December six. He, however, hinted that this year the IFFI would not be as grand as it was last year, but efforts would be made to encourage local artistes besides Konkani films. The government has decided to hold a Konkani Film Festival in October this year.
Mr Rane said Kala Academy will continue to be the main venue of the festival. The Old GMC building, which was renovated and spruced up to house the IFFI office, has come back to life.
Earlier, the Rane Government, after coming to power, had censured the preceding BJP
goverment, headed by Manohoar Parrikar, for hosting the IFFI and had said that its priorities were not entertainment and films, but agriculture, employment generation and basic infrastructure including industry. But later, the government demanded Rs 100 crore as grant for hosting the film festival as it had yet to clear several payments to contractors for the infrastructure works provided for the 35th edition of the festival last year. Mr Rane, however, came down a step further saying Goa was ready to host the festival if it was declared as the permament venue and equally share the expenditure.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy said it would consider declaring Goa as the permament venue only after monitoring the conduct of the festival this year. The captains of the film and various allied industries have also openly favoured Goa as the permanent venue for the IFFI, even the Confederation of Indian Industry came forward to promote international film
trade through such festivals. (Source: New Kerala)
