BJP flays PM's comments about Vajpayee
BJP flays PM's comments about Vajpayee - News India NDTV Correspondent

Wednesday, September 14, 2005 (New Delhi):

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's comments on its leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

During the meeting in New York with US President George W Bush, Singh said he was surprised at Vajpayee's opposition to the nuclear deal with Washington.

The BJP said it was unfortunate that Singh commented on internal political differences during his meeting with Bush.

It pointed out India's political tradition of being united on foreign and nuclear policies.

"Instead of focussing on issues like nuclear, Iran gas pipeline deal and terrorism issue, the PM has carried over the political differences in the country," said BJP leader Jaswant Singh.

Political battle lines

BJP also received support from the Communist Party of India, which is an ally of Prime Minister Singh.

"Whether or not the political parties have a disagreement on this issue, it's not for the PM to talk about this with the US President," said A B Bardhan, General Secretary, CPI.

But the Prime Minister’s Congress Party and the government have defended his comments on Vajpayee.

But the statement is bound to embarrass the government, and has the potential of strengthening the position of those lobbying against the Prime Minister’s nuclear deal with Washington.
