Hi Rod,

I have actually tried working with the internal gain, as well as stereo versus
mono and SD card versus internal hard drive. There were no differences in any
case. The only thing that cleared up the line-in distortion was backdating to
1.1, and nothing has cleared up the whirring sound for the recording made using
the intenal mic on the SD card.

I would attach small samples, but not sure if the list supports that.

Hi Cheryl,

Just one thought.
Have you tried adjusting the gain in the menus for your recordings?
I know that it is not supposed to make a difference, but one never knows.

I must say, that, I use my Book Sense every day for recording purposes and have
not had any of the problems you describe here.

I have the standard model, so cannot comment on how it works with the internal
flash memory.

With my 16GB SD cards it works great!

I produce several radio shows and podcasts each week and use the Book Sense to
record my voice portions of the shows.
I then copy the files to the computer's hard drive and work with them in my
audio editor.
To date I have not heard any sort of "whirring" sound with my voice recordings
whether I am using my external lapel mics or the internal mic.
I will say that I very seldom use the internal mic for my program recordings,
as it tends to pick up every little sound around me and I can't have that in my
programs.
I do, however, use the internal mic to record notes to myself, such as phone
numbers and other such things as I am out an about. I have not heard a
"whirring" sound in these recordings either, but most of these are so noisy and
are of so little consequence that it wouldn't matter in any case.

As for recording from another device using the line in function, I have been in
radio for over 20 years and, as a general rule, for myself at least, have
always used the earphone jack of the playback device, if it had one, to feed
my recording device.
This method gives me a lot more control over the recorded levels and, in some
cases, gives me a double line of adjustment when recording. If the recording
device has an in coming level adjustment and the earphone jack has a volume
control, I then have two ways to adjust the signal to the recording device. I
get much cleaner recordings on the first try and that makes for a lot less work
with the audio editor software.

Sorry to go on for so long, but, the short answer to your query is that I have
not had either of the problems that you asked about.

Take care,

Rod

  Hi all,

I have two problems with recording that I wanted to bring up the list to see
if anyone else is having problems.

First, since the 2.0 update, my line-in recordings are very distorted, as if
I had selected Microphone instead of line-in for my recording source. I am
recording directly for my other device's line-out jack. I can get acceptable
results if I connect to my audio device's headphone jack instead and adjust the
levels, but I had no problem in the 1.1 firmware with line-in recordings.

To rule out a hardware problem, I reinstalled the 1.1 firmware, and the
problem went away. Re-updated to 2.0, and the problem appeared again.

Secondly, ever since I've had my BookSense, if I am recording using the
internal microphone directly to the SD card, I hear a whirring sound during the
recording. This does not occur if I record to the internal hard drive. For the
longest time, I couldn't figure out why the whirring noise was present in some
recordings and not others because I just recorded on whatever source was active
at the time and never even paid attention. But when I actively started
troubleshooting, I discovered that recording on the SD card was the problem. It
has been with multiple cards and does not appear to be specific to any firmware
release.

  Any thoughts?

  Cheryl
