Raul,
While we all like to see your acknowledgments of our suggestions and bug
reports, since GW Micro doesn't write the BookSense firmware, what really
counts in the long run is what HIMS does about the suggestions and bug
reports. Since BookSense users have been making suggestions for
improvements and reporting bugs for almost a year now, it's difficult to say
just how many suggestions HIMS has implemented and how many bugs they have
squashed.
In addition to the request for DRM support, I seem to recall long-standing
requests for a better search feature using text entry, a better equalizer
and more flexible recording settings. And speaking of recording, there were
a lot of complaints when the BookSense was released about how easy it was to
drive it into distortion when using the internal microphone even on the
lowest sensitivity setting. Since I haven't heard many complaints about
this lately, I guess everyone has learned to speak softly and at the
recommended distance from the BookSense to avoid this problem.
We do still hear complaints though about the rather buggy implementation of
Neospeech on the BookSense. While all speech synthesizers mispronounce
words, they don't normally mangle the pronunciation of particular letter
combinations that occur in many common words. I wouldn't mind too much if
the BookSense mispronounced some proper names and uncommon words, but it
would be nice if it could manage words for example, like interest, soldiers,
labor and October. I doubt that an exception dictionary would work very
well to solve this issue since it would probably be difficult to find letter
combinations to make the sounds that Neospeech can't seem to manage on its
own. Unfortunately, we never get any status reports on this issue. Maybe
that's because it involves 3 companies - GW Micro, HIMS and Neospeech.
Actually, we almost never get any information about the status of any issue,
except that it is on the wish list or has been logged once in the database.
Does logging suggestions and bugs only once mean they are reported to HIMS
with the same priority, or does GW Micro prioritize each issue according to
how many customers express their concerns?
I think that the primary reason that customers with the original Book Port
were happy with this device for so long, in spite of it being rather large
and the hardware being somewhat outdated, was that the American Printing
House programmers continued to make improvements in the firmware and
transfer software throughout the product's life cycle, implementing many
suggestions of its customers. GW Micro has always had the reputation of
having such a commitment to its customers, but we can only hope that HIMS is
similarly motivated. Does HIMS even monitor this list, or do they just
depend on feedback filtered through GW Micro?
On a positive note, I am glad that GW Micro, according to the copyright,
wrote the BookSense Buddy software. Although it was developed to help
beginning users, if it makes file transfer faster and more convenient, I
will be using it. In fact, I have downloaded the Beta and will take it for
a spin.

Gary, today my glass is half-full. Just because a feature doesn't make
it sooner than later, it doesn't mean that it's guaranteed to not ever
make it in. I'm sure you would rather have us acknowledge suggestions,
bug reports, and the like rather than simply ignoring all requests. Even
if we cannot deliver right away, acknowledgment for me, still goes a
long way.
Many thanks.

Hello, DRM support is still on the wish list.
Many thanks.

Hi
Will a future upgrade to Book Sense provide access to DRM audio books?
It would, I think, be reasonable for example for GW to charge an
extra fee for such an upgrade.
Thanks, David
