I'm curious, what happens when you use the buddy with a card reader
instead of the booksense directly?
You can't use BookSense Buddy with anything other than BookSense drives. It knows how to easily recognize BookSense drives, but not anything else. So, if you have an XT, you can only choose between to the two XT drives (if you have an XT). If you have a Standard, you're never even prompted for a drive. It will just work. This, I believe, greatly enhances the experience for new/beginner users, which is our target audience.

How does the buddy software know
the difference?

The BookSense hardware has a unique identifier that make is simple to identify when scanning external drives, and when monitoring drive events.
