Peter,
This does work but I'm guessing you didn't update your Office 2007
sets. After installing beta 2, reload your Office 2007 sets from the
Set File Manager dialog. Then go back into Word and you'll see this all
works as expected.

beta doesn't read characters as you navigate this string with the
arrow keys or employ the BS key - so it is difficult to correct.
Here's a workaround: Press the home key to place the text cursor
before the string; press Shift + End to select the entire string; type
