Ha ha no matter who does it someone will always say what a dumb
idea. Remember when Mary broke the vial of salve and anointed Jesus for his
burial and Judas complained, we could've sold this expensive salve and that
money could have better been spent on the poor?
Than again on a personal level how many of us have spent money that could
have better been spent for example buying beer instead of vitamins or a trip
to the fair instead of new shoes.
Maybe even purchasing that new snazzy amateur radio instead of paying your
kids college tuition or defraying his her expense. But than no one posted
an article about your shortcoming on a list so no one but you knows. lol
Of course just because the moneys were spent on this project doesn't mean
refraining from spending on cars blind people could drive would put the
money in the kitty of your choice. You might dislike the alternative
project even more than this one who can say?
Also the danger of this car depends on how it's controledit won't most
likely be driven solo by a blind person on public highways or biways. It's
just a prototype. It might call attention to driving safety and maybe the
powers that be will do more to protect us from the new Highbred silent cars.
Who knows maybe someone will panic and say maybe we should make pedestrian
travel safer so blind folks don't feel the need to drive.
As for laws, if it could be proven a blind driver was safe and could safely
navigate in a vehicle adapted for his /her use I imagine laws would be
changed. If they weren't discriminationlawsuits would be filed and won.
Deaf people drive without the ability to hear sirens.Quadriplegics and
Paraplegics drive in adapted vehiclesusing specialized controls so if a
blind person could safely do the same it would be prejudice to disallow
that. Technology can fail as hand controls for a vehicle driven by a
physically disabled person do and if the hand control fails he might not be
able to brake the vehicle or speed up.
As for insurance It's like owning a house if you want to do the crime you
have to do the time.
I don't know if insurance rates are higher for those special vans or not but
those in wheelchairs etc seem to afford it.

I would definitely say the project of making a dirt buggy driveable for a
blind person is dumb, no matter what organization was behind it. Cars are
lethal weapons and one careless mistake, whether it's by a sighted driver
or a blind person using one of these adapted buggies, could kill someone!
Like I said before, there are too many sighted drivers who shouldn't be
driving and the DMV is one big joke because they aren't strict enough.
The money spent on this project should have been spent on something which
really would have been of practical help to the blind. One idea is to
make funds available to help people buy the adaptive products they need
for independence and employment. Just think! If a product like the
BrailleSense + could be subsidized so the end user could pay, say, $500.00
instead of the $5,995.00 that would be helpful!

Boy, oh boy, I already am a blind driver, grin. I drove myself crazy
with
this thread, ha ha ha he he he.
No, I don't want to hear any jokes about us blind folks and their dog
guides. And if rocks are gonna be thrown then let them be nerf rocks,
grin.
Those who don't know what nerf is or was, please write each other off
list.
I've done some dumb things in my life, so I guess I support another dumb
thing that NFB has done 'cause I'm in it man, hip, hip hooray! Get me
behind the wheel of one of them there doon buggies, grin.
Hmmm, wonder if ACB would have come up with the project Would have been
termed as "dumb?" Notice the quotes."
