Hi guys, I am now using the desktop layout on this new HP laptop and yes, it
does have a numpad but you can buy a USB numpad if you would rather use a
numpad than the FN key and the keyboard. I had bought one for the ACER
netbook that I used to have and I got it through the Best Buy online store.
Just to let you know that this layout is just as proficient as a regular
desktop. Best Regards, Craig R.

Hi Keith,
I'm also using window eyes on a laptop.
why do you say your laptop has no way to use a number pad? did you mean
it
has no numberpad? yes, and there are ways around that.
Or perhaps, did you mean the usual way around it, to hold down the fn key
and use some of the alphabetic keys around the u i and o, does not work
for
you?
This is how most of us laptop users end up having to do it. all today's
laptops have an fn key, and when you hold it down, it makes the group of
alphabetic keys I mentioned into a numeric pad.
Yes, I too have found the utility for making the capslock key into an
insert
key to be very erratic.
so, keeping with the standard layout is your best choice, and it allows
you
to talk to other window eyes user, and understand what they mean when they
specify a key combination, and you in turn will be understood, since
you'll
be using the standard layout.
Are you by any chance familiar with the audio conferencing software called
TeamTalk? it allows many people to form an audio conference together;
it's
very easy to use, and I've wondered if we might use it to hold informal
training sessions on various window eyes topics. one for laptop users
might
be useful; one for scripts; how to use them, what they're good for, how to
write them?
the only difficulty is you'd have to learn a little bit about how to use
TeamTalk. if others were interested though, we could try to arrange some
sessions.
TeamTalk lets us all talk at once, so people can stop the person doing the
explaining when they have a question, before they get left too far behind.
it only requires a headset with a microphone, and it's free.
hth,
Chip

Subject: An improved laptop keyboard layout suggestion
How many of you use the present laptop keyboard layout provided by GW
Micro?
Though my laptop provides much it has no way to use a number pad at all.
I do not wish to create my own layout, or always need scripts to make the
layout more accessible.
I've tested the homer layout but find the remapping of capslock to be
inconsistant.
That needs to be a system wide thing in that case.
Another problem I have found is that if you use keyboard describer mode in
the Window-Eyes system, the insert key or whatever is processed as a
separate key.
So if you pressed insert something you'd see:
"Insert No discription for this key!"
"Reads date and time" for instance.
So let me know what you all think.
Maybe someone at GW Micro could produce an audio document taht actually
goes
over with demonstrations all of the laptop specific keystrokes available
for
Window-Eyes.
Thanks.
