I take it, the authors guild doesn't block these from being read on the

No, the Kindle is not at all the same as the specialized devices that
you mentioned. It lets you read any of the books you can find in the
Amazon.com kindle store. Sure, there will be some overlap between,
say,k bookshare and Kindle, and you can read bookshare books on the
Stream or BookSense. But there are literally hundreds of thousands of
commercially available books through the Kindle store that are not
accessibly available elsewhere witnout you, the user, having to obtain
and scan them. Not a big deal if all you want are the latest best
sellers. But for back list or more unusual titles that don't find their
way onto audible or NLS etc, Kindle is there. From looking at the help
documentation, it is clear that this application doesn't allow the
level of granulatiry in navigation that one might want, e.g. word by
word or spelling a word. But it certainly looks like a step in the
right direction.
