Hi, Ted. I talked with GW staff about this and was told that Windows-U will
not run Narrator while Window-Eyes is running in Windows XP. It works if Window-Eyes is not running. It does bring up a menue from which you can choose to run the magnifier and another utility I can't remember. It works in Vista and Windows 7. What you can do is set up a hot key to turn narrator on whenever you need it. From the Start menu, choose All Programs, Accessories, and then Accessibility. You will find Narrator in the list. Move the mouse pointer and right-click. You will be able to arrow to Properties. From there, you can set up a hot key. You don't need to run Narrator to do this. This is quite helpful when you don't know the status of Window-Eyes but don't have speech. Also, you won't need to worry about the options Windows-U provides. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ted Larson" <[email protected]>

Subject: Somewhat OT; How Can I Reset Narrator To Turn On Again?

Dear List:
Sometimes, I want to turn off my sighted wife's computer (with her
permission of course) so that MagicJack will start properly, if it has
been disconnected. Both of us have Windows XP. The usual Windows key
followed by two u keystrokes does not always shut it down. If I can get
Narrator to work just enough to help me close the computer down properly,
it would eliminate repeated guesses and retries. When I did a Windows-U
on my computer to test it out, narrator came up but I got tangled up in a
magnifier menu. When I got out, it said something about foreground. Now,
when I do a Windows-U to bring up Narrator, nothing happens. How can I
reset Narrator again so it will talk, and what settings should I adjust?
If I can figure how to bring up Narrator again, To close Narrator, do I
just do an alt-F4 like any other application? Any ideas will be
appreciated. Thanks. Regards: Ted Larson
