the PC
i would go with plantronics. I have a bluetooth headset I use with my
cel phone and a wireless headset I use with my computer and have had
very good results from both. Do not, under any circumstances, by a
logitech headset, tried two of their gaming ones and both have a mic
monitor that is really annoying and they close off too much sound so you
feel like you are in an insulated tube. Plantronics' specialty is
headsets, and senheizer makes good wireless headphones as well. If you
do buy from plantronics' line, buy off amazon, they are way cheaper than
the store prices, at least they were with the headset I bought. hth,

Well, I have one idea, that might be something you could consider. Yet,
it is a bit non-convensional; agreed on that. But, it works, and could
last for a good chunk of hours, on each set of batteries. My suggestion,
is to get some rechargeable batteries for the project, and a 'rapid' or
fast charger. Here goes the solution:
There is on the market, small units that plugs directly into your
headphone, or speaker jack of the PC. That is, they use a standard 3.5mm
jack. The unit itself, is approximately the size of a good old matchbox.
Now, the interesting thing, is that this little unit, does transform the
audio of your computer, into a wireless radio signal, on the standard FM
radio band. They usually come with a small switch on them, for choosing
the desired frequency you want to transmit on. And, they run on typically
two AAA batteries, for several hours on one set.
If now, you get such a wireless unit, you simply plug it into the
headphone jack of your computer, and choose the desired FM frequency.
Then, get yourself one of the tiny pocket-sized FM radios, which often
comes with ear-buds, and tune it in on the corresponding frequency. You
now have set up your own private FM radio station, and can walk around the
house, or sit in the easy-chair across the room, and still listen to a
stereo (or if you prefer, a mono) transmission of your computer's sound
system. The transmission usually is good for something like 20 to 40 feet,
or 8 to 15 meters; enough to cover the whole house of yours. Since the
signal is that low, and the walls in an apartment building usually would
be of concrete, you should be pretty safe from not interfering with any
next-doors and their radios either. At least, I did use it in an apartment
building a few years ago, and had no complains from the next-doors.
The wonderful thing about the solution, is first of all its flexibility.
You can, in fact, use it with any kind of a FM radio, and simply use your
standard favorite headset, or ear-buds. And, the moment you don't need the
transmission, and rather want the sound back on your computer speakers,
you simply turn off the transmitter, unplug it, and everything works right
out of the computer speakers as normal. No need to make any changes of
soundcard, no need for setting up any software, no compatibility issues.
The solution works right out of the box, soon as you have determined, and
fine tuned the transmitter and your pocket FM radio. And, it is PRETTY
low-priced. Even at your local radio store, I'd guess you should be able
to pick up a transmitter for something like 20 or 25 US dollars. If you
are good with places like EBay, Amazon, or netshops in general, you could
easily get the transmitter for half the price. Then, a few dollars for
some rechargeable batteries. And the charger for batteries; well, maybe
you already have one sitting around. With good capacity batteries, you
should be able to run as much as 15 hours or more, on one set of
batteries. Now, if you had two sets, you could always have one in the
transmitter, and one being charged. All you need to do, is to swap
batteries every so often, and you can go on, using the solution for years
to come.
Well, agreed, it is fancy with Bluetooth headsets. I have been using them
myself, for awhile. Yet, they do need some setup and pairing, and they
are somehow cranky when comes to compatibility. And they usually only last
for so long, then have to go for recharge, and cannot be used while
charging. The solution here described, goes around all that bushy stuff,
and gives you the perfect flexibility. If you need help, in finding a
transmitter, or just want to read a couple of advertisements so as to know
more about the solution, let me know, and I can quickly look up some for
you. They are for sale most everywhere.
Hope this was of some help for you, or anyone else, who wants a wireless
headphone solution for their PC. Now, go get yourself a wireless, or even
Bluetooth keyboard, and you soon can run around doing your computing as
well from the dining table, from the kitchen counter, in bed, or even
while you are in the bathroom. Smile! - Well, isn't it a wonderful thing,
that we don't have to keep staring at that computer screen all the time?
Finally, we - as blind - have a benefit over the rest of the family.
Smile, Smile, Smile!

Subject: Looking for wireless earphone or headset advice for use with the
PC
Lately, I have had a serious worsening of my back and leg problems and
recently got a very nice recliner for me to sit in that I hope will help.
The one drawback is the distance from my computer. A while back, I bought
a standard, non Bluetooth wireless headset. But setting it up to work
without cutting out my main speakers if the headset ran out of charge was
something I never quite figured out and the thing was bulky and
uncomfortable to boot, especially since I prefer to have one ear free the
majority of the time when I am working on the computer.
What I am looking for is something that will work well and that is more
of an earbud style with or without a microphone. I am using Windows XP
and likely will be until I can save up for a new PC. The current PC does
not have Bluetooth built in, or at least I don't think it does, but if
the best solution is Bluetooth I am willing to consider a device that
uses an adapter. I could use a USB device, a wireless keyboard with a
headphone jack or even something wireless that will plug in to the
headphone jack of my ancient Yamaha speakers I use for my PC speakers.
What is important is to find something I can use comfortably with one ear
free when I need it that I can set up to get all sounds from the PC
directed to or at least set up so that all sound except maybe music and
other media sounds come through the earphone, and that I can set up in a
way that won't leave me stuck without any sound if the battery gives out
while I am using it.
I wouldn't mind using one of the Bluetooth headsets designed for cell
phone use with one earbud and a little microphone if I could get one that
will work the way I want. Any product suggestions or setup advice would
be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris
