Thought I had taken care of those settings, but maybe not!
Have discovered an unstable Excel so I don't think m problem is entirely one 
with Window-eyes.

Vaughan,

There are two settings which I believe will reduce the Excel chatter you 
describe. First, under Verbosity/Office/Excel/Cell Information, set Speak 
Position to never. Next, in Verbosity/Office/Excel/Miscellaneous,
uncheck the "speak worksheet name" and "speak workbook name" boxes.
