This is what I do also Grant, but afraid it does only work with PDF files which have embedded text as part of them.
The commercial version of Adobe does have OCR now as one of it's capabilities (I think it was added in Adobe 9); I don't know how it compares in price or quality to using a separate OCR package, but we do use the Adobe OCR where I work.
