Gang, no need to do a full restart of your machine when this happens.
Just do a relaunch of WE and the problem is fixed. It's annoying to be
sure, but if I recall it has something to do with the way those objects
in the explorer window are rendered in WE's model of navigation. By all
means GW feel free to correct me as I could be totally off base on this
one. But there is certainly no need to restart the full system on this
one as far as I have found.

Marvin, It's probably not your machine because I have the same problem, except
I can access the desktop using windows D.

Unfortunately it's happening here as well on my XP pro machine. I know
the desktop items are on the screen because the mouse keys find them. The
desktop won't speak and will actually say "no selected item." I hit the
letters mo and pressed enter to see if Mozilla Firefox came up and it did.
So the computer has the desktop but WE isn't speaking it when in this
state. It seems to be something with Windows Explorer because other
Explorer windows exhibit the same lack of speech. I have sent a WE Diag
report to GW when WE is in this state. Logging off has helped but it
seems that a total reboot works better. Of course it's possible that this
3 year old machine has something to do ith the problem but it's still
frustrating when restarts are necessary instead of restarting WE. If I
want to put off the total reboot I'll close WE and run NVDA which will
still read the desktop.

Subject: Disappearing Desktop Again
Hi, guys. I haven’t been following the messages on this list, so
don’t know if this has been reported, but the problem of the desktop not
reading if you exit and restart WE has seemed to reappear with this latest
version of WE. I’ve only had to exit and restart once, so don’t know
if this will keep happening, but I had to restart to be able to read the
desktop again.
