It makes perfect sense to me and I'm on at least one other list that does it this way.
All I did for this message was press alt-3 twice quickly to get into the to field. I selected and then deleted David's address and replaced it with the list address. I then tabbed back to the message body and typed this message. That process took not more than a minute and probably less. Two copies will not be received doing it this way either. It should also be noted that it took less that a minute, more like 30 seconds to run a spell check on this message. That should tell you that it's easy to edit before sending.
