Hi, I host my site on a Linode Linux server (www.linode.com.) Mono is very good, and I’m able to run full-fledged ASP.NET sites off of it including forms authentication, SQL queries with MYSQL Connecter.NET, etc.
They give you the barebone machine but Linode has a wealth of information on getting up and running. I came from a purely Windows background until I played around with Linode and am now hosting a game server written in .NET and a website written in ASP.NET on the Linode, so it’s not difficult to do once you get the hang of it. For accessibility, I’d recommend it since you enter commands at a terminal. I’ve never had good luck with installing W-E remotely (I used to have a Windows Server 2003 VPS, and installing W-E crashed the system entirely, forcing the host to reinstall my VPS.) The most accessible I’ve been able to make a Windows VPS is to install NVDA on it and then setting up my remote sessions to port the sound to my machine, but there is a lag if you do that. Good luck! I am thinking of building a Website and picking either a quality shared host or an inexpensive VPS provider. I prefer working in Visual Studio and using ASP.net and Sql Server or Sql Server Express or even the new SQL CE but would consider switching to a lamp system if that is a more accessible option. The Web-Based Control Panels sound like WE may work with those providers but the whole idea of manageing an entire network is a little daunting if there would be accessibility issues along with management of the Windows Platform or Windows Server OS, the IP configurations, IIS and the Database Management complexities. I played with RDP some time ago and had no luck so will avoid that unless I get a new machine and get rid of XP. I know Kate was taking a class, or classes, in network management so perhaps she has some experience with a VPS. Also, what about you other guys and gals? What do you use for building Websites that work well with WE? I am inpatient when it comes to waiting for downloads so performance is an important factor in any choice I will make.
