actually, it is less of a choice than you may like to think, given the
number of groups that choose to use the more well known, but rather
inaccessible facebook, rather than less well known, but more accessible
forum sites or the good old e-mail list format.
when they are not VI specific groups, it is often next to impossible to get
them to change to a more accessible format. I personally detest facebook
with ovengeance, but know of a few groups on there who's content I would
really like to be able to access, and the only accessible way I have found
to do so at the moment, is via the iPhone app, which with a very active
group, is often a very slow and laborious way of doing things, so not really
a very practical option. for that reason only, I am going to see if
social-eyes is a better way of doing this, purely as, as I have said, I want
to access the content of these few groups.
I will however, make no bones about saying that I do rather resent having to
fork out a yearly subscription purely for this purpose, but if it helps me
easily search through the content of active groups to find what I want, and
gives me actual alerts about events and things, like I believe the press
release said, it could end up being reasonably worth it.

Hi Peter
I'm with ya! I think the point some folks are trying to make, and I can
see where they would make this one, is that regular joe sighted user
doesn't have to pay 50 bucks a year to access facebook, and the thought
is that we shouldn't either. However, the reality of it is that
Facebook, in its purest form has accessibility issues that, for whatever
reason aren't going to be fixed so GW came up with a solution that works
better. I would definitely like for it to be free for Window-eyes users
just like GW Connect is, but that's not the case. The anual fee doesn't
seem all that steap if you use it every day. Also don't forget during a
limited time you can get the first year for only $25. That's half off
and that's not bad especially, like i said above if you make use of it
every day. Those who make big use of Facebook will buy this, and those
who won't will hopefully skip it and move on. I don't know where some
folks are being made to feel less if they don't use social networks.
Nobody's holding a gun to these folks heads and forcing them to buy it.
It's a choice.
