Personally, I wouldn't mind ads, as they are commonly used in smart phone apps. If we want something for free, or a lower cost, that would be a compromise we would have to make.

Internet and cable service providers have monthly costs to bring the service to our homes and businesses. If they just charged us the one time cost to bring us those services, I suspect that Internet access might cease to exist for those providers offering the one cost deal. We saw this happen several years back with gyms offering life-time memberships. None of those are still operating today.
