Hello again Jed, As I mentioned in my prior message to you: Weird things happen when your computer system is infected with junk! Often, there's no rhyme ore reason for the bizarre happenings. When multiple things are going wrong, in my experience, my computer needs to be purged of viruses and/or spyware or the previous Windows Update messed up stuff.
I do a System Restore to a date prior to the onset of problems. If that does not work, I do another System Restore a couple of days further back. Usually, if the System Restore fix fails, then you are likely to have real problems requiring expert intervention, such as the Geek Squad at Best Buy. (I don't own stock in Best Buy or have friends that work there; in my town, Fayetteville GA, they do the best job for the least money.) A couple of months ago, I publicly complained on this list about Window-Eyes having a very annoying bug. The support team at GW Micro patiently listened to my rant and offered possible solutions. It turned out that a Windows Update cause the problems, and a System Restore to a date before the last Windows Update remove the anomaly. (Windows 7 Updates have several times cause major problems.) Users with problems should routinely avail themselves of System Restore when problems pop up or their computers develop sluggishness and take forever to do stuff - start up, connect to e-mail or the Internet, and so on. System Restore is a most useful and least used Windows feature. I have saved numerous friends tons of time and money by telling them to try System Restore to solve problems that appear all of a sudden. BTW: I am definitely not a techie type and know little about that stuff, but these suggestions may help.
