This is interesting to me because I've always wondered about this; although not enough to ever ask anyone, blind or sighted how they think when typing. Not that I have any reason to assume there is a difference between blind and sighted folks ways of thinking about it. But of course I don't know that either. I guess the question is only raised because there are many things we think about differently, i.e. tactually instead of visually. And of course, regardless of being blind or sighted, people are people and not everyone thinks the same way about anything. I believe the Window-Eyes default is to have the keyboard in character mode. But I literally cannot type while hearing every character because I think in words and there is no conscious thought about the act of typing. It's just a stream of consciousness flowing freely from my mind to my hands that runs in a separate thread if you will. So hearing an echo of the words in my head when I hit the space bar is perfectly natural to me. Conversely, hearing each character voiced as I type is a confusing interruption of my thoughts. As I said, I couldn't use character mode even if I wanted to unless I was willing to battle with it for a long time with the thought that I'd eventually reprogram my brain to operate in a different manner, which is no small feat for this hard-headed stubborn old mule. So there's my useless contribution to this thread. Perhaps I can get a 5 million dollar government grant to study this phenomenon. grin.

Regards,
Tom

Kevin,

My only point is that everybody has different preferences. I find the constant
response to keystrokes to be less distracting than having silence with a word
jumping out every few characters. There isn't any right or wrong way. It is
pretty hard to type faster than Eloquence in most cases, but there are times
when response is sluggish and I then prefer to hear words. I wonder if he has
keyboard interruptability on.

I've never been able to stand hearing a key echo. Very distracting
and I type way too fast for that.

Wow, i've never set my keyboard to words. I don't want to wait
until the word is done to know if an error was made. <smile> Rick,
which synthesizer are
you using and are you seeing this in all applications?

Why on earth would you ever choose to hear the letters as you type them?
Set it to words.

Hi: I have to type slowly to hear the letters I type.
Even when I set the voice rate in the keyboard settings this continues.
The voice is much faster but if I type a little fast it just starts
to speek the letter and then nothing as i keep typing unless I wait
for the letter to voice, it voices fast but it seems the letters
typed are not getting recognized fast, only speaking fast. So, when
I type no matter how fast the keyboard voice is set I dont hear the
letters unless I type slowly.
Is there another setting to make the reading fast like it was in
windows xp with we?
Is it a WE problem?
Is it a speech engine problem?
Has anyone had this problem and found a fix?
I'm not sure where to start to get the typing to work like it did in
xp where i could type as fast as I wanted and still hear each
letter clearly.
