Hi Rick,
I have encountered a few computers with issues due to windows update
failure.
I would suggest you check that all your system files are present and not
corrupt, by doing the following:
press window key, in windows 7,
type command
hit context key, which is left of the right control key
then arrow down and enter on run as administrator
now you should be in a dos prompt
now type
sfc
then press space bar
then hit the slash key
then type scannow
and press enter
This checks for errors in your system files and fixes them if you have
all the needed
files. If you don't, it will prompt you to enter the windows system disk.
When the sfc is done
press chkdsk
press space bar c
then colon key
and press enter
which checks for bad sectors on your disk.
If you run it and it indicates that you do have errors,
then you need to run the program on reboot by typing
press chkdsk
press space bar c
press colon key then space bar
then slash f
then space bar then slash r
then press enter
It should look like:
chkdsk c: /f /r
which is chkdsk space c colon space slash f space slash r then enter
You will be warned that your system is in use and if you want to
continue on your next reboot?
type y and enter
By the way, the slash f instructs the program to fix the problems and
slash r tells
the program to restrict the system from using bad sectors on the hard drive.
warning!
This can take several hours if you have a large drive; therefore, I
suggest doing this before you go to bed.
Good luck,
Manny

experienced so many disappointments with installers from non-Microsoft
developers that I'm pretty much used to anything. Chip had recommended
using 2008 due to accessibility issues, I recall. I would have tended
to take his advice. Be that as it may, there are some things we just
have to put up with, while, for others, we can seek the advice of those
on the GW email lists before we proceed. Hang in there, Rick. As an
old saying goes: Don't worry; it won't last; nothing does. smile
