David,

To answer your questions, yes, there are plans in the near future to address
the issue of limited mouse functionality in Internet Explorer (9 and higher),
and yes, the next version of Window-Eyes will include the fix. Thanks to you
and to all of our customers for your continued patience as our developers work
on finalizing the next release of Window-Eyes.

Regards,

Marc

Hello David,

Most of the time you can find the element in browse mode then do an
insert-numpad-plus to route the mouse and then numpad-slash to left click.

To insure that you receive proper support, please include all past

correspondence (where applicable), and any relevant information

pertinent to your situation when submitting a problem report to the

Window-eyes Technical Support Team.

Subject: Mouse on the net

This morning I ran into one of these cases where we definitely are being

left behind, due to lacks of screen reader activity. I was performing

some ordering on a website, and it asked me to accept some terms. The

way to accept, is to check a box. Normally, not a big deal, you go there

with your cursor in browse mode, and hit spacebar. Not so this time.

Turning off browse mode did not help either. I have seen several cases

of this kind before, and the old trick was to move the mouse to the

checkbox, and left-click on it. Trouble is, since GW has not fixed mouse

functionality in Internet Explorer after several years, you cannot

perform this kind of trick, at least not when you are blind. Calling the

manager of the website is little help, since all they tell is to do

exactly that - move your mouse there and click.

Another scenario I ran into recently, is at my bank's website. They have

an edit box, where you can type in your account number. Yet, at the end

of the edit field, there is a tiny arrow-like icond. Now, if you click

on this one, you will see a drop-down list open, where you can select

between your personal accounts. All of this, according to the

information I got after more like half-an-hour's conversation with

customer service in the bank. I eagerly tried to inform them that blind

people do not use the mouse, and they simply kept telling me that I was

just to click on that arrow-icon, to open the drop-down list. Thing is,

that one of my accounts cannot easily be accessed simply by entering the

account number, and you need to scroll down to that entry in the list,

so as to perform any action on the account.

POOF, POOF and once again POOF. How am I supposed to be operating the

web, when web-designers are more and more making things only accessible

through the usage of the mouse, and the screen reader does not seem to

have any much for plans to fix the mouse?

Well, GW, AISquare or whatever you like to name yourself - please, could

we have that mouse-functionality up running again. Please, pretty soon.

Things get really complicated when we cannot perform the things that we

are supposed to. Wonder how many sighted people - even among the staff

members - that would quietly sit and accept they could not perform their

banking activityies, just because the mouse did not work as expected.

Blame it on bad web-design, but then you have to blame many a piece of

software as well. And in general we have had the workaround, nicely

built-in with the screen reader, to use the mousekeys. It works in all

other software, just not in Internet Explorer. And the promise was that

there was a fix for it. Still, it is not working. And for the sites I

have had the trouble, Firefox has not been a doable alternative.

Besides, what do you do, if your tech department does not allow for

anything but Internet Explorer? Sorry to say, but I really see this to

tie in with a few other lacks of the screen reader, that might make me

consider alternatives in the future. If GW hope to keep their customers,

this should be one of the things that really got some priority by now.

Staff members, is there plans for any near-future solutions to this

issue? Does next version of the screen reader include any such fix?

Please let the community be informed, as I would be rather surprised

should I be the only one left with this frustration. :)
