The below instructions are from Steve. with the help of a friend, I found the protected mode by navigating to General, not Security, for Acrobat Reader X
+++. In order for screen readers to gain access to documents in Adobe X or XI, you must disable protected mode. Press Control-K while in the program to open its preferences. If you are in Adobe X, navigate to the security treeview item; in Adobe XI go to security enhanced. Next Tab to, and uncheck, the options for protected mode. When this is finished, activate the OK button, restart Adobe Reader, and you should be able to read your files again. If you reply to this message it will be delivered to the original sender only.
