John, A few things to check:
1. The command for the spell checker is F7 and not F8. 2. If you are pressing the correct key, then please also verify whether the Office Enhance app is installed and running. 3. If 1 and 2 check out, then please send us a diagnostic report with Control-Alt-Q when the spell check window is active so we can see what is happening.
