The point is that you would be able to choose what was formatted and what wasn't formatted i.e. in plain text in the same document.

I have to say I agree.  I think we should be given the choice to do
either method, as I can actually see times where the f8-f8 method could
be useful, just not all the time ya know? let me please encourage the ai
squared guys to add the standard text selection method back in.  It's
gotten to the point now where i have to switch to another screenreader
just so I can select a few bits of text, and then switch back to WE 9.
The older way really was faster for me.  After all, regular sighted
users don't select text in that manner.
